On Flyabout - Tasmania

Tasmania - Flight of the Islands

Some 17 people and 6 aircraft departed on Australia Day for the most scenic of flights – The Island Hopper Flyaway. Sue organised the logistics and Nathan organized the weather and he didn’t let us down!

CAVOK

We were treated to a wonderful welcome by the Latrobe Valley Aeroclub with a theme of Australia Day – morning tea of scones, fresh cream and jam, lamingtons, anzac bikkies, savoury damper- it was the best and great to have our own welcoming party Off to an exciting few days!

The picture library replaces a thousand words and as with all our flyaways there is a theme of learning to be had.

* Legal requirements of water crossings
* Safety equipment
* Overwater Skeds
* Operational differences – RPT
* Coastal conditions
* Short Field performance
* Take off performance
* Mechanical awareness
* Flying in company

The list is too large, in summary the spirit of group flying allows for us all to learn from one-another and under the guidance of Nathan, Brad and Oliver.

Wynyard Aeroclub was most supportive and helpful when an annoying and unplanned repair to the sprag clutch meant that a tecnam was left for later repair and retrieval. They have invited us back for a visit…..which we will take up as another opportunity to enjoy our aircraft and awesome flying at a later date.

A comment from the CFI made me smile as he expressed how impressed he was with the professional manner in which all pilots conducted their communication with ATC during the crossings. Thanks Brad for an excellent pre flight briefing. Well done to all!

We are planning another flyaway opportunity that will only be conducted every second year. Yes it’s the Biggy – The one to the top end and back.

I already have six aircraft so if you are interested in sharing some legs of this journey then call me now. I will have final costings and dates are finalized for June 29th for 8-9 days
